Reports to: Nurse Manager
Classification: Hourly, 30-35 hours/week
Job Summary: Provide medical services offered to meet client needs.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Nursing Care
- Provide nursing care: assess patient needs and make nursing judgments which reflect safe nursing practices.
- Meet with clients to explain abortion procedure and risks.
- Maintain accurate records, care plans and follow-through on Nurse Manager’s standing orders.
- Implement physician’s orders and advise physicians of patient’s progress and changes in condition.
- Advise Medical Director when a client’s condition falls outside the norm or is referred for emergency treatment.
- Assist Medical Director or other physicians with exams and treatments as needed.
- Provide reproductive education for client and family to develop an understanding of their health condition.
- Perform pregnancy tests, STD testing, and ultrasounds.
- Perform other tasks as requested by the Nurse Manager.
Volunteer Development.
- Assist Nurse Manager in training medical volunteers in policies, procedures and practices of the Blue Ridge Women’s Center pertaining to medical ministry.
- Assist Clinical Services Manager and Nurse Manager in providing medical in-services for volunteers.
- Help provide spiritual leadership to medical volunteers.
Religious Responsibilities
- Support the religious mission of the Center and regularly encourage the spiritual growth of staff, volunteers, clients, and supporters.
- Reinforce the humanity and value of the unborn child with clients, their guests, staff, and others.
- Share the gospel of Jesus Christ with clients and pray with them, as appropriate.
- Provide spiritual guidance/encouragement to staff, volunteers, and clients.
- Participate in staff prayer and devotions regularly.
- Uphold the Center’s policies and procedures, especially the religious principles in the Statement of Faith and the Expectations of Employee Conduct Based on its Core Christian Beliefs.
Qualifications:
Personal Characteristics:
- Must be a sincere, committed Christian who demonstrates a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior, as evidenced by a consistent Christian walk, regular Bible study and church attendance, and who can competently share the gospel.
- Believes in the sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception through natural death and would not refer or advise a woman to have an abortion.
- Expresses a sincere desire to reach and help at-risk clients considering abortion.
- Must be committed to BRWC’s life-centric approach of ministering and not manipulating.
- Must agree with BRWC’s Statement of Faith, Mission, Motivation, Principles, Commitment of Care and Competence, and Expectations of Employee Conduct Based on Its Core Christian Beliefs.
- Must be willing to maintain a professional appearance and manner.
- Exhibits strong interpersonal, spiritual, and administrative skills, takes initiative, and is flexible, dependable and responsible.
- Must have the ability to organize and perform work in cooperation with other staff members.
- Must be able to work independently with little direct supervision.
- Must be able to provide spiritual leadership and support for staff and volunteers.
- Must be able to work a flexible work schedule including some evenings.
Skills:
- Understand and be able to model and communicate biblical concepts and principals that relate to human life, sexuality and medicine.
- Have demonstrated leadership in the nursing profession.
- Exhibit skill in interpersonal and written communication.
- Have experience in volunteer management and training.
- Demonstrate proficiency in networking with other medical professionals.
- Carry out responsibilities with little direct supervision.
Education/Experience/Licenses/Certifications:
- An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing, or must be a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS)
- 3-5 year minimum nursing experience in a hospital or outpatient setting or RDMS experience
- If a registered nurse, must hold a current Registered Nurse’s License in good standing with the Medical Board of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- If a registered diagnostic medical sonographer, must hold a current Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer credentials with OB/Gyn specialty.
- Sonogram expertise in limited obstetrical ultrasounds
- Experience with pregnancy and STI testing
- Current CPR certificate
